Splendid efficiency and some tech deals

Today I went to OfficeMax to buy a 4GB USB flash memory stick for $35 (no mail in rebate, too…nice deal. And the 2GB USB stick is $20). When I got to the checkout line, the cashier dude was on the phone (well, the headset). These kinds of situations can be frustrating, so I wasn’t expecting much. But this guy — who was about my age and had obviously been through as many of these transactions as I have — was totally on the same wavelength as I was. We completed the transaction with nary a word between us, and with not a second of wasted time or waiting. It was nod, hand item, scan item, swipe card, show card, sign, bag item, hand item over, and boom! Out the door. I can’t even get that kind of efficiency out of people who aren’t multitasking. Kudos, OfficeMax checkout guy!

BTW, they also have a 24″ widescreen LCD for $300! 1920×1200 native resolution, 6ms response. I’d buy one if TGAW wouldn’t kill me. We still have a CRT, and the color is crap on it. Anyway, these are great in-store deals.

EDIT: Looks like the LCD monitor has been at least temporarily removed from the web site.  They still have them in-store, though.
